It's a lovely town with so much history to it.
It's a lovely town with so much history to it. The museums, while needing modernization and some TLC, have some interesting stuff particularly at the military museum. I would have loved to have had the time to visit some of the places where the Brits ambushed Commandant Gideon Scheepers whom they executed after a military court found him guilty of war crimes - they actually had him sit on a chair next to a grave and then the firing squad shot him. Worthy of remembering these guys, (Local African people, Brits and Boers) who found themselves caught up in the first war of liberation against British imperialism. Their sacrifices and keeping their names and the history alive is so important. Then to bring matters more current, a visit to the Robert Sobukwe permanent exhibition is important to help understand the contribution of one of Graaf Reinet's most famous sons.

It is a beautiful little town.
It is a beautiful little town. I was so impressed at how clean the streets are. We will be back and will stay at Cypress Cottage. I forgot to mention that we had a huge breakfast that was made in our cottage just for us.

Most of the historical buildings have been well maintained and painted white. The church is still in excellent condition.
Some modernisation taking place right now in the main street.
SANS parks nature reserve worth a visit with good dry, dirt roads. Valley of desolation view point very good with tarred road to the top followed by a short steep climb. Area can get very hot this time of year Feb 19th 43C.

Graaff Reinet is a must if you are interested in early South African history. The towns has exquisitely restored early settlers properties and tree lined streets. The church in the centre of town is a sight to behold and is open to visitors. The Valley of Desolation just outside of town is absolutely fantastic and there is no better time to visit than at sunset.

It is a very beautiful town.
It is a very beautiful town. You actullay feel like you are in the Western Cape not the Eastern Cape. Drive around the town as there are lovely little coffee shops and places to buy stuff like leather goods. Visit Camdeboo National Park and go up to view the Valley of Desolation. Visit the meusems. Very interesting.

The town has much history behind it and many of the buildings are over 100 years old. Unfortunately we haven't been able to spend enough time there to enjoy all it has to offer. A must stop for us is Maria's Coffee.
Initially, I was unimpressed with lady at reception who received me at check-in. She did not introduce herself, did not explain properly how the property/gate/keys work or asked if I needed anything.
Regardless, the room, cleanliness, furniture quality and overall impression of the guesthouse was impeccable! Heleen-the manager, was friendly and a great hostess. I would most definitely recommend De Wingerd to anyone who wants to stay over in Graaff-Reinet. I’ll definitely visit them again. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Most beautiful and relaxing stay. Beautiful cozy Karoo cottage. Very helpfull host just a whatsapp away. Friendliest cleaning lady came to greet us with freshly baked roosterkoek. Well done on this exstra final touch. 3 farm dogs came to say hallo everyday.
Wonderful clear sky for star gazing at night.
Enjoyed the cozy fire inside the cottage later in the evenings.
Will definitely book again. Hope to use the pool in warmer weather as our 2 days was not as hot to cool of.
The host was amazing!
Very detail oriented. We received the local loadshedding schedule right after the booking. As we arrived, the host gave us a tour of the house, which seems to be newly renovated. There also was drinking water and milk prepared in the fridge for us, as well as non-drinking water in case the loadshedding affects the water supply.
If I'm ever traveling though Graaff-Reinet again, hopefully, this place will be available for booking.
Very comfortable, big living area with nice decor. Very comfortable bed and good quality linen. Everything you need for self catering. Big patio with lots of seating, a bbq with wood and fire lighters (honesty box). The communication before our arrival was fantastic. The gardens were beautiful and neat.
We simply can't get enough of this beautiful place tucked away in the Karoo. We find ourselves back for every celebration or break away. The Drostdy Hotel exudes excellence and the friendly staff makes this place a true gem. Thanks to Janus and Pieter for always making us fee at home!
Toni was a lovely host. She is very friendly and made sure that our stay would be as comfortable as possible. She made us a great breakfast in the morning. We loved that the place was pet friendly. I would definitely recommend booking this cottage for your next trip.

The location was remote as we like it - off the tar track !!
